If you’re new to the business world, you’ve probably come across the term ‘USP.’ When I first started out, I found all the business acronyms really overwhelming. I didn’t know what anything meant - even USP! But it’s an important one, so what does it really mean?

USP = Unique Selling Point (or Unique Selling Proposition)

But what exactly is a ‘Unique Selling Point’, and why is it important?

What is a USP?

A USP is a marketing term used to describe the qualities that set a business, brand, or service apart from its competitors.

In simpler terms, when a client asks: “What makes your service unique or better than others?” - your answer should be your USP.

A strong USP highlights a specific benefit that resonates with your target audience, making your business more appealing and distinct. It can be related to anything within your business, such as product quality, pricing, customer service, or any other factor that provides unique value to your clients.

Example 1: Coffee Shop USP

Imagine a coffee shop whose USP is: "The only coffee shop in town that uses 100% organic beans, roasted in-house daily."

This statement emphasises the organic quality of their coffee and sets them apart from competitors in the local area.

Example 2: Freelance Designer USP

A freelance graphic designer could have a USP like: "Specialising in minimalist, modern design with a fast 48-hour turnaround, helping startups and small businesses create stunning, professional branding without the wait."

This USP highlights:

  • Speed (fast delivery)

It emphasises the freelancer’s expertise while showcasing a unique benefit that sets them apart from other designers.

Discovering your USP as a creative professional or freelancer involves understanding what makes your service stand out to clients. Follow these steps to uncover your unique selling point:

Start by assessing what you excel at. Ask yourself:

  • What do I do best?

  • What am I most confident in delivering to my clients? Identify specific areas where your skills shine, such as a unique style, niche expertise, or a particular approach that sets you apart.

    2. Understand your audience

Who are your ideal clients? Knowing your target audience is crucial to developing a USP. Think about what they value most - what are their pain points, needs, or goals?

3. Analyse your competition

Research your competitors to see what they’re offering and how they position themselves. Look for gaps in their services or areas where you can offer something different. Your USP should address a need or gap that others are not fulfilling.

4. Leverage your experience and personal branding

Your personal journey and experiences can help distinguish you from others. Highlight any unique qualifications, skills, or experiences that add credibility to your work.

5. Clarify what makes you stand out

Bring all this information together to create a clear, concise statement about your strengths and the value you bring to your industry. Make sure to promote your USP everywhere - on your website, social media, and in your client interactions.

Your USP is what makes you you. It’s what helps you stand out in a crowded market and gives clients a reason to choose your business. By evaluating your strengths, understanding your audience, analysing your competition, and leveraging your unique experiences, you’ll be able to craft a compelling USP that attracts the right clients and sets you up for success.
